Which Super Duty Trucks Get Relief From DEF Derates

EPA’s July 2026 proposal could replace low-DEF limp mode with escalating lights and chimes on new light- and medium-duty diesel vehicles, including F-250/F-350-class pickups, no later than model year 2029. The Proposal Reaches Pickups, but Not Retroactively
EPA published the proposal in the Federal Register on July 14, 2026 under docket EPA-HQ-OAR-2026-0728, with comments closing August 29, 2026. Section V.E would extend the no-derate inducement approach to new light- and medium-duty diesel pickups and vans starting no later than model year 2029. That is the provision relevant to an F-250 or F-350 6.7 Power Stroke pickup.
The proposal would replace severe low-DEF derates with a notification sequence based on warning lights and audible chimes. It is still a proposal, not current law. EPA may revise or withdraw it, and the final text—not a headline or summary—will determine the covered model years and certification categories.
Section V.F separately discusses possible guidance for in-use vehicles. It does not itself order Ford to reflash trucks already in service. The supplied proposal does not establish a retrofit date, eligible Ford engine families, a dealer procedure, or whether an update would be free. Those details are unknown.

F-250 and F-350 Pickups Fit the Proposed Light- and Medium-Duty Expansion
For the question owners are asking—whether the new no-derate concept reaches a Super Duty pickup—the answer is yes for new F-250/F-350-class diesels under the proposed light- and medium-duty expansion, no later than model year 2029. The proposal is not limited to highway tractors or large commercial chassis.
The truck still must be a diesel equipped with a DEF-fed selective catalytic reduction system. SCR systems use diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF to control emissions. A gasoline Super Duty does not become subject to a DEF inducement provision because it shares the same badge.
Pickup construction and a GVWR at or below 14,000 pounds do not create a blanket exemption from EPA SCR requirements. The current heavy-duty-engine provision expressly addresses qualifying engines installed in heavy-duty vehicles at or below that threshold in 40 CFR 1036.111.
A badge does not establish the certification route, however. Record the model year, diesel engine, GVWR, engine family, emissions-label wording, body configuration, VIN, and installed calibration. Those facts distinguish a pickup from a chassis cab or incomplete vehicle that may be certified under a different EPA part.
F-450 and Larger Chassis Cabs Need a Certification Check
An F-450, F-550, or larger chassis cab may use an engine certified under Part 1036 rather than the light- and medium-duty vehicle path described in section V.E. Similar grilles and Power Stroke badges do not make an F-350 pickup and an F-450 chassis cab equivalent for emissions certification.
The current rule in 40 CFR 1036.111 applies to covered model-year-2027-and-later SCR-equipped heavy-duty highway engines. It uses staged speed restrictions based on non-idle operating hours and recent vehicle speed. Unless a final rule changes that provision, it remains the binding framework for an engine certified under it.
For a chassis cab, inspect the emissions label and ask Ford or a dealer to identify the engine family and certification basis in writing. Do not infer it solely from GVWR or body style. Three EPA Actions Produce Different Results
The 2025 guidance, current model-year-2027 regulation, and 2026 proposal are separate actions. Only the current regulation is binding unless EPA finalizes a replacement.

EPA’s August 2025 revised SCR guidance expressly says it lacks the force and effect of law. It gives manufacturers acceptable options rather than requiring every manufacturer to use one schedule.
The guidance applies retrospectively to heavy-duty engines and chassis-certified vehicles using SCR. Prospectively, it remains available for chassis-certified vehicles, while prospective use for heavy-duty engines is limited to model years 2025 and 2026. It directs readers to 40 CFR 1036.111 for model-year-2027-and-later heavy-duty-engine inducements.
EPA’s July 14, 2026 proposed rule does not presently override either an approved in-use calibration or the current CFR. EPA describes the distinction between voluntary existing-fleet changes and future regulatory action on its DEF policy page.
Existing 6.7 Power Strokes Keep Their Current Derate Logic
EPA says it cannot mandate field fixes for in-use vehicles under the 2025 guidance. A policy permitting a more forgiving strategy does not remotely install software on a truck. Ford must develop an approved calibration for the relevant engine family and make it available for the VIN before an owner sees different behavior.
Under one 2025 guidance option for heavy-duty truck or tractor engines, progression after confirmation of an SCR-related fault is:
- a ramped 15% torque derate after 650 miles or 10 hours;
- a ramped 30% torque derate after 4,200 miles or 80 hours; and
- a 25 mph limit after 8,400 miles or 160 hours.
The same guidance offers a different chassis-certified-vehicle option: no initial or secondary torque derate, followed by a 45 mph limit after 4,200 miles or 80 hours from fault confirmation.
These are acceptable manufacturer options, not guaranteed Ford thresholds. They also are not the warning-and-chime system proposed for new light- and medium-duty diesels. A pre-2027 owner must verify whether Ford released a compatible update for the exact VIN, engine family, configuration, and certification category.
Ask the dealer for the installed calibration identifier and applicable Ford service documentation. A statement that the truck has “the EPA update” is not enough. If no compatible update exists, the figures for the optional schedules do not change the truck’s programmed countdown or final restriction.
Current MY2027 Heavy-Duty Rules Still Use Staged Limits
For a covered model-year-2027-or-later SCR-equipped heavy-duty highway engine, the current regulation uses staged vehicle-speed restrictions. It does not convert every initial warning directly into a 25 mph limit.

EPA bases the category on average vehicle speed during the preceding 30 hours of non-idle operation. Without that operating history, the vehicle is presumed to be high speed (40 CFR 1036.111).
These hours should not be converted into estimated mileage. Highway travel, towing, idling, worksite use, and stop-and-go operation produce different distances per engine hour. The model badge also does not determine the speed category.
The current schedule differs from both the 2025 guidance options and the 2026 proposal. Mixing their figures produces a countdown that applies to no actual truck.
A Warning Is Not Yet an Active Derate
Four events can occur at different times: the initial warning, detection of a possible fault, confirmation under the diagnostic logic, and an active torque or speed restriction. The dashboard wording alone may not show which stage has been reached.
Current supported trigger categories include critically low DEF, DEF determined to be out of specification, a missing catalyst signal, and specified open-circuit faults involving SCR components. Adding fresh fluid may correct a genuinely low supply, but it cannot repair a failed sensor, damaged connector, open circuit, or missing catalyst signal. It also may not correct diluted or contaminated fluid.
EPA’s March 2026 DEF-quality monitoring guidance recognizes that urea-quality sensor failures can cause unnecessary inducements. It permits manufacturers to seek approval for alternative monitoring, including qualifying NOx-sensor strategies, and discusses approved software updates for existing products. It does not install a Ford calibration or abolish responses to legitimate SCR faults.
When a warning appears, record its exact wording, lamp sequence, DEF level, engine hours, mileage, operating conditions, and all active, pending, and permanent diagnostic codes. That record helps separate low fluid from a quality-sensor, wiring, catalyst-signal, or control problem.
Repair Confirmation Ends the Inducement, Not Code Clearing
Under the current model-year-2027 heavy-duty-engine rule, inducement must deactivate after the onboard system confirms that the triggering condition is resolved. Depending on the fault, that can require restoring the DEF supply, correcting fluid quality, restoring the catalyst signal, or repairing an SCR circuit.
Filling the tank may not end a restriction until the system verifies the new level or quality. Replacing a part may not clear it if damaged wiring remains, another related code is active, or the monitor has not completed.
The regulation allows a generic scan tool to deactivate inducement-triggering codes while the vehicle is stationary. That is not a permanent bypass. If the condition recurs within 40 engine hours, the previous progression can resume instead of providing a fresh grace period (40 CFR 1036.111).
None of these policies authorizes DEF deletion, SCR removal, sensor defeat, an emulator, or software that disables emissions controls. The valid remedy is a completed repair or a manufacturer-supported, approved calibration.
Verify the VIN Before Relying on Derate Relief
For a truck already on the road, give the dealer the VIN and ask for five specific items: its EPA certification category, engine family, installed calibration identifier, any applicable emissions software update, and documentation of what that update changes. If the answer relies only on the F-Series badge, it is incomplete.
For a new F-250 or F-350, the proposed rule points toward warning lights and chimes instead of a severe low-DEF limp mode no later than model year 2029. Until EPA publishes a final rule and Ford documents its implementation, do not assume a model-year-2027 or model-year-2028 pickup receives that treatment.
For an F-450 or larger chassis cab, verify whether Part 1036 applies. If it does, use the current heavy-duty-engine regulation unless and until final text replaces it.
For a pre-2027 6.7 Power Stroke, the practical answer remains vehicle-specific: the proposal does not remove its 5 mph derate, and a less severe strategy requires a compatible Ford update. No retrofit schedule, covered Ford VIN list, or implementation date is established in the supplied proposal.
